Frequently Asked Questions about Maker Spaces
Q: What's a Maker Space?
A: A makerspace is a physical location where people gather to share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build. Makerspaces are not just about the tools; they're about enabling making and creating a community of like-minded people.
Q: Do I need to know how to make stuff before joining a maker space?
A: Not at all. Makerspaces are great places to learn hoe to make stuff.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Sandbox Maker Space
Q: How do I start making things at Sandbox?
A: Enroll in our ELMS/Canvas course and take the introduction and safety training module & quiz. (ter.ps/Learn2Make)
Q: Who's the Instructor
A: Trick question, Maker Spaces are where you learn from other makers and by trying new things. This isn't a class, there aren't any grades, and you don't have to pay.
Q: If I have had training on similar equipment, do I still need to complete training in Sandbox?
A: Yes. The training should be easy if you have experience and it's absolutely necessary for us to ensure everyone is using tools correctly.
Q: When are you open?
A: Generally from 11am to 7pm Monday through Friday when classes are in session. Our hours are posted on our [Facebook page].
Q: What materials do you provide?
A: We provide basic materials to be used while learning to use our tools. AS you transition from learning to building items for your own use, you should bring your own materials.
Q: What materials do you sell?
A: We don't currently sell materials. This is something we'd like to offer in the future.
Q: How may I contribute or volunteer?
A: Come in and start using the space, help others, meet a few of our managers, then decide if you want to become a volunteer manager.
Q: Is there a dress code or required protective equipment?
A: Yes, several of our studios or tools require safety glasses / hearing protection / short sleeves. See the training modules for more information.
Q: What if I want to hire someone to make something?
A: That's not something we can help with but if your hired gun is part of the UMD community they're welcome to work here.
Q: Do I have to pay to use Sandbox?
A: No, Sandbox is free to use by anyone with a UMD ID.
Q: What are the methods of payment for 3D prints, stock material, etc.?
A:
Q: I am a UMD Alum. Do I have access to Sandbox?
A: Not yet. It's something we want to provide but we still need to figure out how to make it work. We'll probably have to start small with a monthly Alumni Night.
Q: May I work on personal projects in Sandbox?
A: That's what we're here for. Feel free to work on our personal project too if you have extra time.
Q: I’m an instructor, may I run a lab or an entire class at Sandbox?
A: We can talk about it. Our charter specifically prohibits using Sandbox as a reserved classroom space but we've hosted class sessions and labs.
Q: I’m organizing an innovation-, design-, engineering-related event that I’d like to have Sandbox – is this possible?
A: Absolutely. Send us an eMail SandBoxUMD@gmail.com
Q: If I invent something in Sandbox, do I own the Intellectual Property (IP)?
A: Yes. Once your invention starts making you more money than you can spend it would be really cool of you to send some of it our way. No pressure.
Q: This is great info, but I still have questions about specific equipment. Who should I contact with my questions?
A: Take a look at our Wiki (ter.ps/sandboxwiki) if you still have queastions, email SandBoxUMD@gmail.com
Q: Aren't there already shops on campus?
Q: Why do Computer Science students need a maker space?
Q: May I schedule a tour of Sandbox?
A:
