Selecting a CAD Package
Learning to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software is a worthwhile investment of your time that will speed your progress on future maker projects you undertake. While you can get quite far making parts on a laser cutter using illustration & design software such as [Adobe Illustrator], Corel Draw, or Inkscape, these soon fall short when designing more complex 2D and 2.5D designs and are of course, completely useless when designing 3D parts.
There are many options when choosing a CAD package, so many that making a choice can be overwhelming. The software you would choose to do professional product design work would be very different than what you would select if you were a bicycle frame fabricator or cabinetmaker.
For non-professional makers or even for professionals with small start-up businesses it's hard to beat Autodesk's Fusion 360. This is a full-featured parametric 3D CAD package with integrated CAM. Autodesk has a maker-friendly license agreement that effectively makes the software free for most people. Some makers were disappointed when Autodesk modified the Fusion 360 licensing terms in 2020, removing several high-end features. For now, educational users have full access to Fusion 360 features at no cost.

Best Bets
- Autodesk Fusion 360 - Currently the best bet for students and non-profesional makers. Autodesk offers favorable licensing terms for makers and is continuously improving the product. Fusion 360 includes powerful a CAM module giving an all-in-one package. Free-ish
- Vectric Vcarve Pro - If you're only interested in designing 2D or 2.5D work, VCarve is worth a look. It combines CAD and CAM in a single easy-to-use package and is ideal for creating decorative signs with engraved lettering and other artistic features. It's expensive to buy outright but we have a makerspace license that allows you to install the software on your computer for free if you only cut parts using machines in our makerspace. Not Free.
- Carbide Create - If you like the user experience of Vcarve Pro but not the price tag you may want to take a look at Carbide Create which is free software that looks a bit like VCarve but with fewer features and at no cost.
- SolveSpace - a free (GPLv3) parametric 3d CAD tool that runs on multiple platforms. Useful for modeling 3d & 2D parts to output to 3D Printers, Laser Cutters, or to other CAM software for use on a CNC router or mill. Mechanism design with constraint solver to simulate planar or spatial linkages, with pin, ball, or slide joints. Free.
- TinkerCAD - Autodesk's easy-to-use CAD software targeted at kids but useful for many makers. Has several unique features including circuit design and simulation and scripting that allows you to automate drawings. Runs in browser. Free.
Other Options
- 3D Slash A completely different approach to 3D modeling. 3D Slash lets you carve your design like a stonecutter.
- OpenSCAD - OpenSCAD is free software for creating solid 3D CAD models. It is available for Linux/UNIX, Windows and Mac OS X. OpenSCAD is not an interactive modeller. Instead it is something like a 3D-compiler that reads in a script file that describes the object and renders the 3D model from this script file. This gives you (the designer) full control over the modelling process and enables you to easily change any step in the modelling process or make designs that are defined by configurable parameters.
- ImplicitCAD - Inspired by OpenSCAD, ImplicitCAD should appeal to CS students. Implemented in Haskell, ImplicitCAD extends OpenSCAD's scripting language to be a more genral purpose programming environment.
- Other Autodesk Programs AutoCAD, Inventor, Maya and other software products by Autodesk are available for free to UMD students and faculty so are well worth a look.
- DesignSpark Mechanical - Free 3D design software that simplifies creation of solid models. Windows only.
- FreeCAD A free and open-source (under the LGPLv2+ license) general-purpose parametric 3D CAD modeler and a building information modeling (BIM) software with finite-element-method (FEM) support.[1] FreeCAD is intended for mechanical engineering product design but also expands to a wider range of uses around engineering, such as architecture or electrical engineering.
