Jira is a project management (PM) software, developed by Atlassian. Sandbox has access to a cheap, non-enterprise, 3 user license. Because of this, it is presently a staff-only utility.

Glossary

  • Project - the top level of organization in Jira. A bucket for issues.
    • Next-gen project - a streamlined project layout. A relatively new Jira feature.
  • Issue - the primary unit of data in a Jira project. Commonly misidentified as 'ticket.' See enumerated issue types below.
    • Epic - the largest unit of work, parent to tasks. Represents an ongoing effort in the project roadmap.
    • Task - a middle unit of work, parent to subtasks.
    • Subtask - the smallest unit of work.
  • Roadmap - a timeline view of all epics in a project. The primary visualization tool of next-gen projects.

Motivation

Our Jira instance serves the following purposes:

  • Personal productivity tracker/organizer
  • Fast, first-line knowledge management (KM) about ongoing work
  • Record of work done, for managerial purposes
