If you are accustomed with Microsoft Outlook and/or need a shared calendar then we offer the UMIACS Exchange service. If you work primarily on a PC, collaborate with primarily PC-based users, expect to email MIME attachments or just feel most comfortable with a PC based mail solution, the exchange mailserver is likely the best solution for you. === 8/11 Phishing Attempts ===
Staff has received word that users are seeing mail claiming that their email quotas are nearly full and action is required to avoid loss of the account. THIS IS A PHISHING ATTEMPT, please delete the mail. Tell-tale indicators that this is a phishing email include the bogus to/from addresses, the generic (and poorly formatted) University of Maryland signature, as well as the hyperlinks which point to non-UMIACS systems. IF YOU HAVE RESPONDED TO THE MAIL by clicking the link and providing your credentials, please notify staff@umiacs.umd.edu immediately, and change your password at https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/password.

Condor Upgrade
Staff has upgraded the UMIACS Condor pool to HTCondor 8. For most users, this should be a smooth transition. However, if you have the Condor 7 paths in your environment (e.g. /opt/UMcondor), these should be removed. The Condor binaries now live in /usr/bin. Please contact staff with any questions or concerns.

Mavericks and Backups
The most recent version of OSX, Mavericks, is incompatible with our deployed version of Druva. Druva is our backup software and we have upgraded it to support Mavericks. However, you will need to upgrade your Druva client. You can get the latest version of the client here. Alternatively, you can bring your laptop to the helpdesk and we will upgrade it for you.

UMIACS has Matlab licenses that cover Linux, Windows and Mac. To access them you have to be using a university owned computer. If you would like to run Matlab on a machine that is not University-owned, you can check the pricing through OIT/SLIC here

Linux
Below are the different locations of Matlab across our supported linux workstations and servers. The one in bold is our latest version.
Below are the different locations of Matlab available for university-owned machines running Windows XP and Windows 7. The one in bold is the latest version we have available:

* Matlab r2007a

OSX
Below are the different locations of Matlab available for university-owned machines running OSX. We expect that all versions should run on OSX 10.4 and newer. The one in bold is the latest version we have available:

* Matlab r2008a
* Matlab r2008b
* Matlab r2010b
* Matlab r2011b
* Matlab r2012a
* Matlab r2012b

License Troubleshooting
Campus has a limited number of seats for Matlab itself, as well as the various toolboxes. When calling functions in a toolbox, Matlab will automatically check out a license, making it temporarily unavailable to other users. Sometimes it's important or necessary to check the number of toolbox licenses available.

Windows License Troubleshooting
On Windows machines, the necessary command is as follows. Please note that you may need to adjust the path to reflect the available Matlab versions and the installation path. Additionally, this assumes that you are using a 64-bit version. "win64" needs to adjusted to "win32" on a 32-bit installation:
$MATLAB_PATH\bin\win64\lmutil lmstat -c "$MATLAB_PATH\licenses\network.lic" -f $TOOLBOX_SHORTNAME

As an example, here is how to query Matlab r2009b on a 64-bit Windows XP host for the Aerospace Blockset Toolbox:
C:\Program Files\matlab7.9r2009b\bin\win64\lmutil.exe lmstat -c "C:\Program Files\matlab7.9r2009b\licenses\network.lic" -f Aerospace_Blockset

Unix License Troubleshooting
On Unix machines, the necessary command is as follows. Please note that you may need to adjust the path to reflect the available Matlab versions and the installation path. Additionally, this assumes that you are using a 64-bit version. "glnxa64" needs to adjusted to "glnx86" on a 32-bit installation::
$MATLAB_PATH/bin/glnxa64/lmutil lmstat -c $MATLAB_PATH/licenses/network.lic -f $TOOLBOX_SHORTNAME

As an example, here is how to query Matlab r2010b on our 64-bit RHEL5 hosts for the Parallel Computing Toolbox:
/opt/matlab-r2010b/bin/glnxa64/lmutil lmstat -c /opt/matlab-r2010b/licenses/network.lic -f Distrib_Computing_Toolbox

Toolbox Shortnames
The toolbox names themselves don't always work with this command; Rather, Matlab has a set of shortnames which can be passed to the lmstat command. The following are all the valid shortnames:

Aerospace_Blockset
Aerospace_Toolbox
Bioinformatics_Toolbox

You can tweak your Matlab experience using a file "startup.m". If this file is present in the current working directory where you launch Matlab, it will be executed. You can perform a variety of tasks using this file. These include (but are not limited to) customizing the window environment, setting variables for later use, and enabling use of 3rd party toolboxes. Alternatively, you can use the userpath env variable to set a path other than the current working directory for startup and 3rd party toolbox locations.

You can tweak your Matlab experience using a file "startup.m". If this file is present in the current working directory where you launch Matlab, it will be executed. You can perform a variety of tasks using this file. These include (but are not limited to) customizing the window environment, setting variables for later use, and using 3rd party toolboxes. Alternatively, you can use the userpath env variable. Please see the following links for more information:

Admin: /* RPC Quotas */

Tree Quotas
The current most prevalent style of quota management is done through tree quotas that show up in how much space is available in the file system by using the df command to inspect either the current path (no arguments given) or a given path. NFShomes and many other file systems utilize this style of quota management.

For example to show my /nfshomes/derektest home directory quota i can just use df ~

$ df ~
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
umiacsfs02:/nfshomes/derektest
1024000     49984    974016   5% /nfshomes/derektest

RPC Quotas
Alternatively we now have some file systems that support RPC quotad quotas. These are reported to the user by the quota command. Home directories that are mounted from our Dell FluidFS NAS will support these kinds of quotas (/cliphomes, /cfarhomes, /cbcbhomes).

To find out what your current quota you can run df . to find out what file system you are currently mounted from (in this example it is fluidfs:/rama_cfarhomes/derek)

# df .
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
fluidfs:/rama_cfarhomes/derek
1073741824 759351008 314390816  71% /cfarhomes/derek

You can then run quota and that line will list your quota information for that file system. If you see errors such as "Error while getting quota from ..." you may safely ignore these as some of our file systems such as Gluster do not report quotas correctly.

$ quota
Disk quotas for user derek (uid 2174):
Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace
fluidfs:/rama_cfarhomes/derek
337560       0 10240000               0       0       0

If you have hit your RPC Quota and haven't realized it, you may see some strange issues. For example, you will not be able to write-out files (although 'touch' and file concatenation will succeed). Some applications such as vi will throw "FSync" errors. Similarly, commands such as wget will appear to succeed but your files will be zero-length.

$ df ~
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
umiacsfs02:/nfshomes/derektest
1024000     49984    974016   5% /nfshomes/derektest

RPC Quotas
Alternatively we now have some file systems that support RPC quotad quotas. These are reported to the user by the quota command. Home directories that are mounted from our Dell FluidFS NAS will support these kinds of quotas (/cliphomes, /cfarhomes, /cbcbhomes).

To find out what your current quota you can run df . to find out what file system you are currently mounted from (in this example it is fluidfs:/rama_cfarhomes/derek)

# df .
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
fluidfs:/rama_cfarhomes/derek
1073741824 759351008 314390816  71% /cfarhomes/derek

You can then run quota and that line will list your quota information for that file system. If you see errors such as "Error while getting quota from ..." you may safely ignore these as some of our file systems such as Gluster do not report quotas correctly.

$ quota
Disk quotas for user derek (uid 2174):
Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace
337560       0 10240000               0       0       0

UMIACS has Matlab licenses that cover Linux, Windows and Mac. To access them you have to be using a university owned computer. If you would like to run Matlab on a machine that is not University-owned, you can check the pricing through OIT/SLIC here

Linux
Below are the different locations of Matlab across our supported linux workstations and servers. The one in bold is our latest version.
* Matlab r2012b

A UMIACS Account is a collection of distinct account credentials, associated with a unique user, that provide access to various UMIACS systems and related resources.

When a UMIACS Account is first created, three sets of credentials (Windows, UNIX, and Jira) are configured based on the username and password requested via the UMIACS Account Request (new users: see GettingStarted.) With the exception of Jira, which requires a full email address, the username is identical for all credentials tied to a UMIACS account.

Windows
:Your Windows (aka "PC") account authenticates against our ActiveDirectory domain and is set when you first create your UMIACS account.
:It controls access for the following resources:
::*Windows computers
::*exchange e-mail
::*VPN Authentication

UNIX
:Your UNIX (aka "Kerberos") account authenticates against our Kerberos realm and is set when you first create your UMIACS account.
:It controls access for the following resources:
::*IMAP e-mail
::*AR-controlled resources (wikis, repositories, webapps)

Jira
:Your Jira username is your full email address. By default, the Jira account associated with your @umiacs email address authenticates against the kerberos realm. However it is possible to set a separate password for this account. If you change your password through the Jira web interface it will create a new, separate password, and no longer authenticate against the kerberos realm. Changing your Jira password DOES NOT change any other UMIACS passwords.

:Please note that Jira creates a new account for each new email address it sees (including non-UMIACS addresses like @gmail or @umd.edu addresses.) This occasionally causes some confusion for new users. Please see the Jira page for further details.

There are currently two ways to change your UMIACS passwords:
*Via the web interface tool on the UMIACS Intranet at:
:https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/cgi-bin/changepass
*Stop by the UMIACS Helpdesk, in room 3142 AVW
::If you plan on stopping by the UMIACS Helpdesk, please make sure to bring photo ID
Password Requirements
#Must be atleast 8 characters in length
#Must have alteast 3 of the following character classes: lower-case letters, upper-case letters, numbers, punctuation, special characters
#Cannot be the same as any of your previous 5 passwords
#Cannot contain a string that is part of your username
Off-site or out-of-state users
UMIACS Staff requires positive identification before we'll honor a request to change a password. In the event that you are unable to change your password via the methods above, send an email to staff@umiacs.umd.edu detailing your situation. Typically, we'll ask you to get in touch with your PI/advisor, as they should be able to identify you. They will work with staff to reset your password on your behalf, and then communicate it to you in a secure manner.
