Announcements
<startFeed />

Thanksgiving Break Closure
The UMIACS Help Desk will be closed from Thursday November 28th through December 1st. We will re-open at 9:00 A.M. on Monday December 2nd.

Mavericks and Backups
The most recent version of OSX, Mavericks, is incompatible with our deployed version of Druva. Druva is our backup software and we have upgraded it to support Mavericks. However, you will need to upgrade your Druva client. You can get the latest version of the client here. Alternatively you can bring your laptop to the helpdesk and we will upgrade it for you.
Adobe Acrobat Reader on Linux (RHEL/Ubuntu)
We regret to inform our users that we will no longer be able to provide
this application on our supported Linux systems (Windows and Mac
systems will not be impacted). We will be removing and blacklisting it
from our installed systems during our November maintenance window.

The reason for this change is that there are several known
vulnerabilities in the last version for UNIX systems (9.5.5). Adobe
has declined to fix these issues and has instead deprecated the
product[1]. Adobe has also declined to support a UNIX client in
version 10 or version 11. Red Hat has already advised its users to
disable and remove the application effective immediately[2].

Additionally, due to the recent security breach acknowledged by
Adobe that has compromised their closed source product[3], it is
only logical to expect more vulnerabilities to be found.

As such, during our November maintenance window we will be removing the
application from our systems. We encourage our users to remove it from
any self-supported machines they administer. Please email
staff AT umiacs.umd.edu if you have any further questions.

The following are the alternative PDF readers supported:

RHEL5: evince or kpdf
RHEL6: evince or okular
Ubuntu: evince or okular

Java
Due to the frequency and severity of recent Java vulnerabilities, it is strongly advised that Java be disabled in all browsers on your workstations. If you do require Java, it is recommended to maintain a second, separate browser, solely for the instances which require Java. For instructions on disabling Java on your workstation, please see the following: How to disable Java

http://www.umiacs.umd.edu

Users can access the main website and lab sites for editing in two ways:
* From Unix as /fs/www - and can be remotely accessed by SFTP to a supported Unix host (eg. OpenLAB)
* From Windows as \\umiacs-webftp.umiacs.umd.edu\www-umiacs - and remotely accessed by the same file share over the VPN

Personal Web Space
http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~username

Users can access their website for editing two ways:

* From Unix as /fs/www-users/username - and can be remotely accessed via SFTP to a supported UNIX host (eg. OpenLAB)
* From Windows as \\umiacs-webftp.umiacs.umd.edu\www-users - and remotely accessed by the same file share over the VPN

In general, large datasets related to a Labs research should go into the specific lab's web tree, not the individual users. Remember that users' webpage is not permanently maintained once the user leaves UMIACS.

Adding A Password Protected Folder To Your Web Space
1) Create the directory you want to password protect or cd into the directory you want to password protect

2) Create a file called .htaccess (vi .htaccess) in the directory you wish to password protect.

3) In the file you just created type the following lines
AuthUserFile /your/directory/here/.htpasswd
AuthName "Secure Document"
AuthType Basic
require user username

For example, if you were going to protect the /usr4/test/private/ directory and you want the required name to be class239, then your file would look like this:
AuthUserFile /fs/users/www/username/private/.htpasswd
AuthName "Secure Document"
AuthType Basic
require user class239

4) Create a file called .htpasswd in the same directory as .htaccess. You create this file by typing in htpasswd -c .htpasswd username in the directory area to be protected.

In the example above, the username is class239 so you would type htpasswd -c .htpasswd class239

You will be prompted to enter the password you want. The .htpasswd file will be created in the current directory and will contain an encrypted version of the password.

To later change the username, edit the .htaccess file and change the username. If you want to later change the password, just retype the above line in step 3 and enter the new password at the prompt.
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Secure Document"
AuthType Basic
require user class239

4)Create a file called .htpasswd in the same directory as .htaccess.

UMIACS provides web space hosting for research/lab pages and user pages.

Main Website and Lab Pages
http://www.umiacs.umd.edu
