New OpenLAB Desktop
We have added a new mac, Koala, to the desktops available in AVW 4462. Koala is replacing our old OpenLAB mac, Grizzly, and runs Mac OS X 10.5.

OpenLAB SSH Key Change
We have changed opensub01's SSH keys to match those of opensub00. This allows for openlab.umiacs.umd.edu round robin to work appropriately.

The new RSA Fingerprint of the key to verify is,
ONStor Upgrade
We have found a bug that is tweaked by CIFS against the ONStor virtual file servers. We are going to perform a system upgrade on Wednesday April 8th from 6pm-10pm. Since we have a clustered system there should be no downtime for any of our virtual servers however you could see a performance degradation during the update because all the virtual servers will have to be running on one of the ONStors. The major file systems that are hosted in our ONStor virtual server complex are,

* /nfshomes
* /fs/www
* /fs/ftp
* lccd NFS shares including /lccdhomes
* lamp NFS shares
* glcf NFS shares
* /usr/local and /opt NFS shares for UNIX clients

SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a network protocol used to securely transfer and manage files on remote systems. SFTP is layered on top of the SSH protocol, and is preferred over FTP as a method of remote file transfer.

Connecting to an SFTP Server
Under RedHat Linux 3, 4, and 5, and Mac OS X, the following command from a terminal will connect a client computer to the UMIACS OpenLab.

wing:~ bkirz$ sftp bkirz@openlab.umiacs.umd.edu

On Windows XP or Vista hosts there are no SFTP clients installed by default. Users can install PuTTY, which will enable SSH and SFTP access.

Alternatively, users can use the UMIACS Intranet SFTP Web Applet located here without installing any additional software.
Further Information
UMIACS provides FTP services for transferring data to and from external collaborators. Since the FTP protocol is conducted entirely in plaintext, external users login to the service as anonymous, and internal users can access the file directories internally. Users will never authenticate over FTP with their UMIACS account.

Getting data from Collaborators
Collaborators can drop data for users into their FTP incoming file system, located from the FTP service at

<pre>ftp://ftp.umiacs.umd.edu/incoming/<username>/</pre>
FTP logins can write to this space to upload data, but cannot list the files they have placed there. Users can then access the data in their ftpincoming space from /fs/ftp/incoming/<username> from supported unix machines, or from windows via \\conduit.umiacs.umd.edu\ftpincoming.

Please move your data as soon as possible after it is left for you - files older than 15 days are subject to deletion as necessary.

Publishing data sets via FTP
Users can place data to be externally accessible in their public FTP space, which is located from the FTP service as

Windows users can enable X11 forwarding in PuTTY by opening the PuTTY Configuration Pane, and checking the box marked "Enable X11 Forwarding" under Categories->Connection->SSH->Tunnels.
