===Comcast DNS Issues===
We are currently experiencing issues with Comcast home internet in PG county not correctly handling DNS resolution for UMIACS hostnames, that can seem to be affecting connectivity to UMIACS.

If you are having problems getting to UMIACS hosts you can use our name servers to resolve those specific host names then connect using the IP addresses you lookup. Our name servers are 128.8.120.19, 128.8.120.50, and 128.8.132.75 to use this information to get the ip address of the host somehost.umiacs.umd.edu you would use the command "nslookup somehost.umiacs.umd.edu 128.8.120.19", from a linux, windows or mac command prompt.

Unfortunately the problem seems to lie in an interaction of Comcast's name servers with those run by OIT, but we are looking into ways we can interact with those parties to get this issue resolved.

===UMIACS Downtime 8/7/2010 10pm - 8/9/2010 ~2am===
Facilities Management must complete the project to replace the fire safety systems in the UMIACS, CS, and OIT main data centers late at night on 8/7/2010 and during the day on 8/8/ 2010.	The south side of AV Williams will be without power from midnight until 8pm on 8/8/ 2010.

The outage will disrupt operations in the UMIACS data center, network connectivity for all systems in AV Williams, and power to the x2xx and x1xx wings of AV Williams. Consequently, all technical services in UMIACS will be unavailable during this time. We will begin shutting down our services at 10pm on 8/7.	Please note that services from other units including OIT and CSD will also be effected.
We will make every effort to bring core services back online before 2am on 8/9/2010. We hope to have all services back online by the start of the business day on Monday 8/9/2010. We will keep this wiki up to date with progress or other important notices.

We regret the disruptive nature of this work but the scope of work necessitates a complete outage of our primary data center. Please send mail to staff@umiacs.umd.edu with any questions or concerns.

*Our site is now fully functional. If you encounter any issues (like stale mounts we have missed) please let the help desk know at 5-1775 or staff@umiacs.umd.edu. Thank you for your patience (UMIACS Staff, Fri Jul 16 13:57:13 EDT 2010)

*At this time most services (major file servers, nfshomes, most web services, imap mail, printing, web mail) are back. We are still working on getting the rest of the services back online. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused the community and are still working hard to get all services back up. Thanks (UMIACS Staff, Thu Jul 15 15:05:36 EDT 2010)

*Today at 12, our main datacenter in 1139 lost power due to an unexpected power event which took off all main UMIACS infrastructure services and networking. We are currently working to restore services to UMIACS but we do not have a current estimate when we will be back. (Mark, UMIACS Staff, Thu Jul 15 13:15:20)
===UMIACS NFS Problems===
This afternoon we experienced a problem with directory service configuration for most of our NFS service, that created problems accessing NFS services. After resolving the core issue, some of our NFS servers continued to have difficulties which now seem to have been resolved.
===ONStor Upgrade Mon March 1st 2010 8pm-12am===
Staff will be upgrading the last of our 2 ONStor clusters which provide NFS and CIFS file service to many of our labs and centers. Because they are clustered and highly available we expect to be able to upgrade the cluster without any downtime. There may be however some short hiccups when we fail servers over they should just show up as delays in file service. The following are the virtual servers that will be affected by this upgrade:

* umiacsfs02 (nfshomes)
* umiacsfs01 (legacyfs file systems)
===Outage of Biomolecular Sciences Building Emergency Electrical Systems===
FM has posted an outage of the emergency electrical systems for the Biomolecular Sciences Building on 12/28/2009 from 7:30 am until 1:30 pm. This should not effect regular building power, but some hallway lights tied to the emergency power and the building's elevator, are likely to be out of service.

While we have been assured by FM and NTS that this outage should not effect the normal building power or the network connectivity within the building, previous unplanned outages effecting the emergency electrical have also effected the building's external network connectivity, so there is a chance that network problems could arise with this outage. If there is an outage someone from staff will work to resolve any issues that remain, but will be unable to do anything to restore access until the end of the outage.

Machines in AV Williams should be unaffected by this, so if you have concerns about the outage of need to get access to your files during the outage, for most data machines in AV Williams can be used. If you are unsure about what machines, if any, you can use to access your data, if the BSB network is down, please mail staff with the path to the data you are concerned about and we will let you know if what possible alternate methods of accessing your data exist.

== Open Lab Introduction ==

The UMIACS Open Lab is built on several Sun Servers and a small number of Sun Ray Terminals. The goal of this facility is to provide a basic computing environment for communications, authoring, file sharing, and general administrative computing.

== Getting an Account ==

To get started with a UMIACS account, fill out the form at https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/intranet/accountRequest/form.htm. This will establish your email account, web site, and ftp site. It will also establish an account on the UMIACS Open Lab.

To get access to additional facilities, like our clusters or our Windows-based Workstations

== Logging into your Open Lab Account ==

You may log into your Open Lab account by using the Secure Shell (ssh) to connect to openlab.umiacs.umd.edu. Ssh is available on most modern UNIX systems, and versions for Windows and MacOSX are freely available to members of the UMIACS community. An online java-based client that is suitable for use with most web browsers is available online at https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/intranet/ssh.

You may also log into a machine in our [[AVW room 4462]], this lab has a variety of machines running OSX, Red Hat Linux 4, Solaris 8, and Windows XP.

== Accessing your Data ==

You may access your files by using a Secure File Transfer Protocol (sftp) client or through Secure Copy (scp). Sftp and scp are available on most modern UNIX system, and versions for Windows and MacOSX are freely available to members of the UMIACS community. An online java-based client that is compatible with most web browsers is available online at https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/sftp/.

== Managing your Account ==

You should change your password using the `passwd` command, and you can manage your account information through the web form at https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu/chinfo/.

== Printing and Copying ==

You can print to any UMIACS printer using the line printer daemon commands. Publicly accessible printers are available in AVW 3142, AVW 4462, and BSB XXXX. Copiers are available in AVW 2126 and AVW 44XX.

== Software ==

The openlab provides a variety of software for administrative and scientific computing. In addition to the set of standard programs that are installed with the Operating System, a collection of frequently used programs are available under /usr/local/bin. Additional less frequently used software packages are installed under /usr/local/stow and /opt/stow.
== Acceptable Usage ==

The Open Lab is intended primarily for Administrative and Academic Computing. We hope you will use it as a means of accessing your email, web pages, and ftp sites. Many uses find that it is convenient as a secure terminal to our Lab Facilities and as a trusted data storage system for your reseach data.

Please note that it is not intended to support any large-scale scientific computing and that long running or demanding jobs will be killed without notice.
