Disable Nautilus Thumbnail Feature (RHEL)

  1. Open a file browser window.
  2. In the top bar click 'File -> Preferences'
    Files and Preferences was clicked from the top bar, and the Home page of the Files app is open on the screen.
  3. Navigate to the 'Search & Preview' tab.
    The Search & Preview tab in the Preference Menu is shown.
  4. Under the thumbnails section select 'Never'.
  5. Exit the window.

Clean up existing thumbnail files

Thumbnails are stored in the following directory:

~/.cache/thumbnails/

Removing that directory will clean up the thumbnails.

Checking Thumbnail space usage

The following command shows the current disk space utilization of the thumbnails:

du -sh ~/.cache/thumbnails/
