Please note that Backup and Sync has been replaced by Drive for desktop as of mid-2021. Please follow the instructions there to migrate your backup settings over.

Google Drive Backup and Sync can be used to continuously backup local files on a machine to a Google Drive. This means that after selecting designated locations on the machine, these locations and all of the files within them, both at the time of setup, and as new files are added, will be backed up to Google Drive.

Windows Setup

Once at the webpage, navigate to the lower left-hand box labeled "Backup and Sync" and click the download button.

Removal Preferences

Once in the preferences menu, you will have the option to change removal preferences.

There are three preferences that you may choose from.

  • Always remove both copies - This preference will delete both copies of a file (cloud and local) when the file is deleted on your machine without prompting.
  • Never remove both copies - This preference will maintain the cloud version of a file when it is deleted on your machine.
  • Ask before removing both copies - This preference will delete both copies of a file (cloud and local) when the file is deleted on your machine after you confirm you would like to delete the cloud copy of the file as well.
