===UMIACS Downtime 8/7/2010 10pm - 8/9/2010 ~2am===
Facilities Management must complete the project to replace the fire safety systems in the UMIACS, CS, and OIT main data centers late at night on 8/7/2010 and during the day on 8/8/ 2010. The south side of AV Williams will be without power from midnight until 8pm on 8/8/ 2010.
The outage will disrupt operations in the UMIACS data center, network connectivity for all systems in AV Williams, and power to the x2xx and x1xx wings of AV Williams. Consequently, all technical services in UMIACS will be unavailable during this time. We will begin shutting down our services at 10pm on 8/7. Please note that services from other units including OIT and CSD will also be effected.
We will make every effort to bring core services back online before 2am on 8/9/2010. We hope to have all services back online by the start of the business day on Monday 8/9/2010.  We will keep this wiki up to date with progress or other important notices.
We regret the disruptive nature of this work but the scope of work necessitates a complete outage of our primary data center. Please send mail to staff@umiacs.umd.edu with any questions or concerns.

Comcast DNS Issues

We are currently experiencing issues with Comcast home internet in PG county not correctly handling DNS resolution for UMIACS hostnames, that can seem to be affecting connectivity to UMIACS.

If you are having problems getting to UMIACS hosts you can use our name servers to resolve those specific host names then connect using the IP addresses you lookup. Our name servers are 128.8.120.19, 128.8.120.50, and 128.8.132.75 to use this information to get the ip address of the host somehost.umiacs.umd.edu you would use the command "nslookup somehost.umiacs.umd.edu 128.8.120.19", from a linux, windows or mac command prompt.

Unfortunately the problem seems to lie in an interaction of Comcast's name servers with those run by OIT, but we are looking into ways we can interact with those parties to get this issue resolved.
