UMIACS Security Alert Feb 28th 2014
As everyone is aware due to the recent security issues on campus our
cadence of monthly security patches has been important for the
Institute.  However there are a number of Critical level security
issues that have appeared in the last week.  This means that we will
need to patch our systems outside of our scheduled[1] monthly
maintenance windows.

Supported Windows users you will see a prompt from LANDesk asking you
to patch your system and will require a reboot.  You may defer this up
to 6 times, 24 hours apart.

Supported RHEL/Ubuntu users please make sure that you have restarted
your Firefox browser by Thursday March 6th 2014 at 8pm as we will be
killing any Firefox processes that are older than Feb 26th 2013 at
that time.

Finally we want to get the word out of two very important security
issues in the Apple ecosystem.  There is a particularly bad SSL
vulnerability in both Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks[2] and iOS 7.0.x[3] and
6.1.x[4].  If you have a self supported Mac or have a iPhone/iPad/iPod
we would encourage at your earliest convince to update.

If you have any questions you can always contact staff@umiacs.umd.edu
or our HelpDesk.

APC Surge Protector Recall
APC recently issued a recall of surge protectors manufactured before the year 2003 due to potential fire hazards when overheating as a result of abnormal electrical conditions. We will handle the recall process for any affected devices you may have. Please see this page for more details.

Mavericks and Backups
The most recent version of OSX, Mavericks, is incompatible with our deployed version of Druva.  Druva is our backup software and we have upgraded it to support Mavericks.  However, you will need to upgrade your Druva client.  You can get the latest version of the client here.  Alternatively you can bring your laptop to the helpdesk and we will upgrade it for you.
