Authentication Migration Tuesday May 27th 2008

As many of you many know, there are lots of forged emails that are being sent with the intention of stealing your username and password. You have probably received notification from campus (OIT) and other departments about these "phishing attacks".

Most of these meesages are asking you to provide your personal details or passwords over email. UMIACS Staff will never ask for these over email and you should not give these out over email. We do have an Authentication Migration starting this week and we will be sending out targeted emails to users that need to help us by migrating their passwords for their UNIX accounts.

The mails will include a URL to https://intranet.umiacs.umd.edu that is secured by a SSL certificate. It is important that if you do get one of these that you please complete the migration as we will be migrating out of DCE authentication on Tuesday May 27th 2008. It is always ideal to verify the SSL certificate for any site that you are going to be entering any username/password or any sensitive information.

When we do migrate our authentication system on Tuesday May 27th 2008 this will be effecting those using UNIX (Solaris/Linux/Mac) accounts, IMAP/SMTP logins and most of our web sites. Windows authentication will not be effected including Exchange or the VPN. For a full list of services that will or will not be effected please see,
