===Power Outage in the North Side of AV Williams===
'''Saturday, October 2nd 10:00pm until Sunday, October 3rd 8:00pm'''
FFacilities Management plans to begin replacement of the AV Williams North UPS on Sunday, October 3.  This work will require a power outage for that entire side of the building, which includes offices on all floors of the x300 and x400 wings and the secondary data centers in 1446 and 4464.  Staff will shut the Chimera Cluster, Crocco Cluster, RDEC Cluster, and Lattice Grid down before the outage and will be on-site to bring them back online afterwards.  We will also be shutting down any workstations in the x300 and x400 wings to protect them from power spikes.  We will make every effort to bring them back online by the start of the business day on Monday October 4th.
The main UMIACS data center will not lose power and all of the Institute's core services will be available during the work.

Comcast DNS Issues

We are currently experiencing issues with Comcast home internet in PG county not correctly handling DNS resolution for UMIACS hostnames, that can seem to be affecting connectivity to UMIACS.

If you are having problems getting to UMIACS hosts you can use our name servers to resolve those specific host names then connect using the IP addresses you lookup. Our name servers are 128.8.120.19, 128.8.120.50, and 128.8.132.75 to use this information to get the ip address of the host somehost.umiacs.umd.edu you would use the command "nslookup somehost.umiacs.umd.edu 128.8.120.19", from a linux, windows or mac command prompt.

Unfortunately the problem seems to lie in an interaction of Comcast's name servers with those run by OIT, but we are looking into ways we can interact with those parties to get this issue resolved. <endFeed />
