UMIACS Monthly Maintenance Window Thursday February 21st 2013 8pm-12am

When: Thursday February 21st 2013 8pm-12am

In an effort to better secure our computing systems and in following the recommendations from security firms and the US government, we have decided to remove the Java JRE from Windows machines. Please note that we will be leaving the Java JDK, which is used to develop code and includes its own JRE that can be used to run, test and develop Java code. Removing the Java JRE will remove a frequently and easily exploited risk in our Windows workstations. If you feel that you still require Java for your web browsing please let staff know in the next 2 weeks and we will keep it on your system. However, please note that we will be upgrading from Java 1.6 to the latest Java 1.7 as support for Java 1.6 has ended. This will not affect Javascript, which will continue to function normally as it is supported directly in your web browser.

UMIACS staff will be taking our regularly scheduled maintenance window. A full list of our 2013 maintenance windows can be found below[1]. This allows us to patch for security issues that have cropped up since our previous window.

All UNIX/Linux machines in the institute will be rebooted during the maintenance window (RHEL5, RHEL6, Ubuntu). Services such as IMAP, web servers, and the print service will all see small interruptions while machines are rebooting.

All Microsoft Windows machines will reboot during the maintenance window. Windows services such as Exchange, printing, etc. will see small interruptions during the maintenance window.

All Apple Mac OS X machines will reboot during the maintenance window.

Java

Due to the frequency and severity of recent Java vulnerabilities, it is strongly advise that Java be disabled in all browsers on your workstations. If you do require Java it is recommended to maintain a second, separate browser, solely for the instances which require Java. For instructions on disabling Java on your workstation, please see the following: How to disable Java

Additional information on the current Java Vulnerability (as of 1/13/2013) can be found here: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA13-010A.html
