Mailman3 List Administration

You must have a local password for mailman that will be uses for all mailman activity.

To set or reset your mailman password visit:

https://lists.umiacs.umd.edu/accounts/password/reset/

Managing a List

To manage your list, go to:

   https://lists.umiacs.umd.edu/accounts/login/?next=/mailman3/lists/

After signing in you will see the lists that you are associated with. Click on the name of any to interact with those lists.

  • Just because you are the list administrator doesn't mean you're subscribed to (or you have to be subscribed to) this list.
  • Messages sent out aren't necessarily delivered immediately; it could take up to 5 minutes.

Membership Management

To add/remove non-members, moderators, and owners navigate to your home page and select the list you'd like to moderate. Then click on the 'Users' button in the top bar. From here you can select which type of membership changes to make: member, non-member, moderator, or owner.

To add/remove members to the list, you can click on the 'Mass Operations' button in the top bar, and select the 'Mass subscribe' or 'Mass removal' option.

Please note that if the user you are adding has a UMD address, you should use that address in order to comply with the Institutional email standard.

Posting options

This is where you can specify who can post to the list (is it open or moderated?), and set rules for auto-acceptance or rejection. Navigate to your home page and select the list you'd like to moderate. Then click the 'Settings' button in the top bar, and click the 'Message Acceptance' button that appears on the left.

Templates

Mailman3 has templates that you can use to automatically send messages when a certain action happens (A member posts to the list, a message bounces, etc), or when emails are sent out regularly (post headers and footers, digest messages, etc).

To create a new template, navigate to the list and click the 'Templates' button in the top bar. Then click the 'New Template' button, and select the appropriate name for the template. From there, fill in the template with whatever text you would like it to say, and hit 'Save'. Some templates also allow you to use variables within them.
