3/24 Kelly Hoffman Kenny, C. & Sandefur, J. (2013). Can Silicon Valley save the world? Foreign Policy 201(Jul/Aug), 72-77. (copy in shared folder).

That's an easy read, so I would also *highly* recommend Change the World: Silicon Valley transfers its slogans—and its money—to the realm of politics by George Packer in The New Yorker.

4/14 Kristine Rogers Kaminskas, M., & Ricci, F. (2012). Contextual music information retrieval and recommendation: State of the art and challenges. Computer Science Review, 6(2-3), 89-119 (copy in shared folder)

It's a little bit long. Don't worry about the technical details; I chose this because it covers some of the same issues as text-based information retrieval systems, plus adds some extra dimensions.

I also recommend watching this short video, which touches on some of the issues/challenges in organizing data for information retrieval: Jeff Jonas, "Big Data: The New Physics." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5Vx9GJX2s8
